A platform fighter. Every hit raises your rival's damage, and the higher it climbs, the farther they fly. Knock them past the edge of the screen to take a stock.
Press Enter or Start on a controller. Esc or Start pauses during a match.
Arc buttons (default). The buttons curve around your right thumb, with the most used ones biggest. You don't need to lift your thumb between them: slide from one onto the next and it presses (Attack into Jump, Jump into Shield for a wavedash). Press right on the seam between Attack and Special for a smash attack in the direction you're holding; keep pressing to charge it.
Aim assist (touch only). If the stick is centred when you attack, the attack aims at a nearby opponent: an up attack if they're above you, a down attack if they're below you in the air, or a turn-around attack if they're behind you. Hold a direction on the stick to choose for yourself.
Flick pad (optional). Tap the right side to attack, flick to smash that way.
Classic (optional). The original six-button layout, one press per button.
Thumbstick. Put your thumb anywhere on the left half of the screen and slide to move. Flick it sideways to dash, and keep holding to run. Hold it up or down while you attack for different moves.
Buttons. Attack, Heavy (hold it to charge), Special, Jump, Shield and Grab sit on the right. Hold Shield to block. Tap it with the stick sideways to roll or down to sidestep, or press it in the air to air dodge. Tilt the stick while pressing Special for different specials; hold up and tap Special to recover. After a grab, push the stick to throw.
Shield. Hold shield to block attacks and projectiles. It shrinks while held and with every hit, and breaks if it runs out, leaving you dizzy. Grabs go straight through it. From shield you can jump, grab, roll (tap a direction) or sidestep (tap down).
Perfect shield. Raise your shield in the last moment before an attack lands (about 5 frames) to parry it: no shield damage, the attacker is briefly stunned and projectiles fly back. The bubble flashes white while the window is open.
Dodge with the same button. Tap shield while holding left or right to roll, or while holding down to sidestep. Press it in the air for a one-time air dodge. You can't be hit during the flash. Dodging again and again makes each dodge slower and less invincible, so space them out.
Steer your knockback. When you're launched, hold a direction to bend your flight path. Hold up and toward the stage to survive longer.
Tech. Press shield just before you hit the floor or a wall while tumbling to recover instantly. Hold a direction to tech-roll. Miss it and you're knocked down for a moment.
Directions change attacks. On the ground, light and heavy each have neutral, forward, back, up and down versions. For a back attack, press the attack together with the direction behind you, or within a moment of turning around. In the air, light becomes a neutral, forward, back, up or down aerial. Hold up with special to recover.
Grabs. Grab beats shields, armored moves and charging opponents but loses to a dodge. While holding someone, tap light to pummel for 2%, or push a direction to throw them. When you're grabbed, mash buttons and wiggle the stick to break free sooner. The more damage you have, the longer it takes.
Specials. Every fighter has four: neutral, forward, down and up. Hold a direction while pressing Special to choose; pressing back turns you around first.
Crouch and slide. Hold down on the ground to crouch. You're harder to hit and take a little less knockback, and light, heavy and special come out as their down versions. Press down while running to power-slide under attacks, and jump out of a slide to keep your speed.
Recover early. When you're launched, a white ring flashes partway through the knockback. From then on you can break out with any special or a jump, so you can start recovering sooner. Getting hit also gives you back an air jump and your up special.
Wavedash. Hold down-left or down-right, press jump, then press shield right after (or keep shield held while you jump). Straight down wavelands in place. You'll snap back to the floor and slide. Air dodge diagonally down onto a platform to waveland. Flick the other way during a dash to dash-dance.
Dashing. Double-tap left or right to dash, and keep holding to break into a run that's faster than walking. Press light while dashing or running for a dash attack, or jump, special or heavy straight out of it.
Ledges. Drift into a stage edge to grab it, and you're briefly safe from hits. Then hold toward the stage to climb, jump to leap up, attack to climb with a strike, shield to roll in, or hold away to let go.
Wall jumps. Press jump while touching a wall to kick off it. Hold toward a wall to slide down it slowly. You can't kick off the same wall twice in a row, so bounce between walls to climb. Wall jumps don't use up your air jumps.
Combos. Press light three times for a light chain (it keeps going only while the hits land). After any light attack hits, press special to cancel straight into a special, once per combo.
Angle your side attacks. Hold up or down along with forward (or tilt the stick up or down during the wind-up) to aim side light, side heavy and side special higher or lower. Angled up launches higher; angled down sends foes low and flat.
Hold heavy to charge any grounded heavy, up to one second. A full charge hits half again as hard and launches much farther. On a controller, push and hold the right stick to aim and charge a heavy in one motion, and flick the left stick sideways to dash. Solo players can use either key set.
